CHILD RELIEF & YOU
- the hope of the underprivileged Indian child
CRY
is an Indian charitable organization that works towards
restoring to millions of India's deprived children their
basic rights to survival, participation, protection
and development. The initials stand for Child Relief
and You, but in spirit, it stands for much more.
It stands for hope, for a need to change what must be
changed, for collective action by individuals and organizations,
for the rights of underprivileged Indian children.
Way back in 1979, Rippan Kapur and seven of his
friends each contributed Rs. 7 and at his dining table,
working from his home, a movement was born.
Every child ought to be given a fair starting chance
to read, write, go to school, play, be healthy and have
a home. CRY believes in this and reaches out to
thousands of children for whom school and a home are
just a dream.
CRY recognizes that while there are many people who
have the means and skills to help less fortunate children,
but feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem,
there are agencies doing things to help children, but
who are constantly strapped for manpower, funds and
infrastructure. It is this gap that CRY tries to bridge.
What CRY does, is, it serves as a link between the
underprivileged child and you, the people who want
to make a difference.
CRY works to raise awareness among people on the issue
of underprivileged children, harness public commitment
and support, and channelize the concern, goodwill, time,
money and skills of thousands of individuals and organizations
towards child development initiatives run by committed
social workers. Initiatives that strive to transform
the lives of children.
Through this process CRY effects grassroots movements
of change that empower deprived communities to take
responsibility for their lives and the future of their
children.
Today CRY supports 169 child development initiatives
in 8 key states across India and has so far touched
the lives of one million children in the past 23 years.
From a single unit, single city operation in Mumbai,
CRY now has offices in Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai and
Bangalore.
Today CRY raises resources through Individual and
Corporate donations and sale of CRY products.
CRY has an active Youth Wing, that brings enthusiasm
to the task of consciousness building in the 10-25 age
group, with the aim of sensitizing the youth to the
issue of underprivileged children and thereby building
better citizens for tomorrow. The division was born
in 1990. The Youth Wing conducts interactive sessions
with the students, takes them to visit urban slums to
learn about the life of the slum children by working
with them.
You can rewrite the future of a child with the following
Child Sponsorship options:
1. providing education
2. providing education and health
3. Supporting a physically and mentally challenged child
4. Support a pre-primary centre or balwadi
5. Support a non-formal education centre (transit school)
