This is the list of India's biggest ad spenders and
it continues to be dominated by FMCG majors, with
Hindustan Lever (HL) at the top. With Rs696.58 crore
spent in 2000, it is well ahead of Colgate-Palmolive
India which spent about Rs213.96 crores in the same
year. In fact, the money spent by companies ranked from
13 to 20 together would add up to what Hindustan Lever
spent in a year. Interestingly, HL's Ad Spent/ Sales
percentage is only 6.08 as compared to the 18.18 of
Colgate-Palmolive India.
In the same list which ranks 100 companies, Reliance
Industries (RI) tops among the companies that spent
less on advertising but earned more in sales. RI spent
Rs37.23 crores on advertising in 2000, but made sales
of Rs28008.25 crores, which makes its Ad Spent/ Sales
percentage only 0.13. Second to that is Larsen &
Tourbo, which spent Rs57.04 crores, made sales of
Rs7846.51 crores with a Ad Spent/ Sales percentage of
0.73.
